Brief Biography

My journey in science education and research started in 1989 and since then I am engaged in teaching basic and applied microbiology and biotechnology and motivating students for entrepreneurship. I graduated from Division of Microbiology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi in 1990. I served at University of Delhi, New Delhi and Thapar Centre for Industrial Research, Patiala before joining Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (Deemed to be University), Patiala as a faculty in 2000.

I did my Post-Doctoral Research at the Department of Bioengineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan during 1993 to 1995 and later underwent two weeks training on Technology Entrepreneurship and Education at Walter A Haas Business School, University of California, Berkeley, online training on Marketing for Incubator managers and entrepreneurs organized by Asia Pacific Incubator’s Network (APIN) and accomplished many orientation courses on higher education, human values, IPR and commercialization of technology and innovation.

Formalized course curricula for starting BSc Microbiology, BTech and MTech Biotechnology and MSc Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry and 5-year Integrated BSc-MSc Biotechnology. Designed entrepreneurship development training modules in agri-business and management. Transformed higher education with prime focus on outcome-based research led teaching and learner centered approach.

My research contributions are development of simplified method for fast screening of plasmid DNA in cyanobacteria, construction of cloning vector for gene cloning in coryneform bacteria, development of protocols for mass cultivation of microalgae, beneficial soil microbes, use of flyash as soil amending agent in forestry plantations and its development as carrier material for microbial inoculants and field application, process development in green chemistry for chromium VI removal from industrial effluents by waste microbial biomass from fermentation industry, isolation, characterization and application of microorganisms for metal removal, dye decolorization, pyrene degradation, biowaste recycling, cellulose degradation and ethanol production with process development from lab scale to industrial scale. Presently the focus is on biorefining of lignocellulosic waste biomass as well as nano-bioremediation of pesticides and nano-antimicrobials.

Published more than 100 articles, two patents, 14 book chapters, compiled two manuals, one book and guided the project work of many B.Tech and thesis work of seventy five M.Tech and M.Sc. and 21 Ph.D students. Completed 26 research and technology demonstration government sponsored projects costing more than 7.5 crores. I have organized nearly eighty training programs, workshops, symposium, entrepreneurship development programs and awareness camps and national and international conferences. I mentored 30 companies through business incubation out of which 10 have started their own ventures in bio-business.

I received Japanese Govt (Mombusho) Scholarship (1993-95) and Shiksha Rattan Puraskar (2011) and was Elected Fellow of Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy (FABAP) 2010, Fellow of International Congress of Chemistry and Environment (FICCE) 2009 and Fellow of Association Microbiologists of India (FAMI) 2012. I was nominated four times (2006-08) as an expert member of National Board of Accreditation (NBA) by AICTE) for evaluation and accreditation of B.Tech Biotechnology program. Delivered several invited talks and I am on the panel of experts and member of Board of Studies of several academic institutions, professional societies and task force member of DBT star college and Himalayan Bioresources.
